Should I Postpone My Newborn Baby’s Photo Shoot If the Baby Has Acne?
As a professional newborn photographer serving families across the San Francisco Bay Area, I get this question all the time:
“My baby has acne! Should we wait before taking newborn photos?”
The answer is simple: absolutely not. Please, do not postpone your newborn photo session because of skin issues.
Newborn skin is perfectly normal — and editing is part of my job.
Newborn skin is unpredictable — and that’s part of the beauty of photographing these tiny little humans. Almost all newborns will have some skin concerns in their first weeks of life:
- Baby acne
- Redness
- Peeling skin
- Discoloration
- Blemishes or rashy patches
This is completely normal.
Your baby’s skin is adjusting to life outside the womb — and it shows.
But here’s the thing:
Newborn skin imperfections will not show in your final photos.
Why? Because I personally hand-retouch every single image for you. I spend hours editing newborn galleries to perfection. When you look at my portfolio, you’re seeing the result of careful, skilled editing — done by hand, not by a quick app or preset.
That tiny pimple on your baby’s nose? Gone.
That dry peeling skin on their fingers? Smoothed out.
Red patches or uneven tone? Corrected with care.
Waiting often makes skin issues worse
I always tell my clients:
Don’t wait, hoping the skin will get better.
In fact, many newborns develop acne or other skin flare-ups between 3–4 weeks old — right when parents think about postponing. Sometimes skin gets worse before it improves.
At the same time, babies are also changing quickly in these weeks:
They become more alert
Their sleep gets lighter
They grow bigger and stronger
This means the sleepy, curly, squishy poses you see in newborn photos become harder and harder to achieve as the baby gets older.
The earlier we photograph your baby — ideally within the first 2 weeks — the better chance we have for those classic newborn images you love.
Skin can always be edited.
But time cannot be reversed.
